Part 4 - Reaching / Leaving Las Vegas

On my flight to Vegas, I thought of every film I've seen that was set in Las Vegas, and wondered which my trip would most closely resemble. Those films were:

  • Con Air
  • Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
  • The Gambler
  • Leaving Las Vegas
  • Showgirls
  • Oceans 11
  • The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas

As it turned out, no film has yet been made that truly reflected my time in Vegas, unless someone has made a film about a guy getting gout, not being able to walk for 2 days and having to visit a doctor (which didn't cost an arm and a leg surprisingly). Sadly the hotel didn't have any crutches I could borrow, but they did very generously offer to "lend" me a mobility scooter (for $55 per day).

Still, before the crippling, I managed to do a few touristy things. I watched a few shows, including the French Derren Brown (who would definitely hate the moniker I've given him) ...

... and Piff the Magic Dragon (who did a runner before I could get a photo with him. Can't think why) ...

The Pinball Hall of Fame is basically a big nostalgia-filled warehouse, packed with arcade games and pinball machines from my mis-spent youth.

You can probably see this sign from the moon

Tucked away in the corner, the pinball museum had a Zoltar machine from the film Big...

It didn't work

I also watched the final table of World Series of Poker Main Event - for about 30 seconds until I realised there's not much point unless you can see anyone's cards. Instead, I entered a tournament at Caesar's Palace instead (which is quite the venue). 4 hours later I was out, but I'll spare you the details of the bad beat (in short, the other guy got incredibly lucky).

Before I left Vegas, I also visited the Mob Museum which described how the mafia built and ran Las Vegas until very recently. However, since I'd already picked up the hire-car, I turned down their tempting offer to taste the kind of moonshine they distilled through the prohibition era.

No longer the richest man after visiting Vegas
